November 2021: Mini-Symposium zu Biofilmen<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>der symbiont war ein wenig im Vorwinterschlaf, w\u00e4hrend der Kombucha von Maya Minder fleissig wuchs. Nun ist Zeit zur Ernte! Der 2&#215;2 Meter-Biofilm ist hoffentlich dick und z\u00e4h genug geworden.\u00a0<br><br>Biofilm? Nein, nicht <a href=\"https:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0086967\/\">sowas<\/a>.<br><\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/gallery.tinyletterapp.com\/321464d1278196afdb23ce5b8f00642b2edfa688\/images\/d3f890b5-c256-c1c8-b4b2-e4738f5c0a7c.jpg\" alt=\"\"\/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Biofilme bestehen aus einer Schleimschicht, in der Mischpopulationen von Mikroorganismen (z. B. Bakterien, Algen, Pilze, Protozoen) [und von mehrzelligen Organismen wie R\u00e4dertierchen, Fadenw\u00fcrmern, Milben, Wenigborstern oder Insektenlarven, die sich von den Mikroorganismen ern\u00e4hren] eingebettet sind. <\/em>Bisschen umst\u00e4ndlich formuliert, Wiki, aber ja: Kleinstlebewesen-Gross-WGs. Solche Biofilme sind nicht nur f\u00fcr Kombucha-Enthusiasten interessant, sondern auch f\u00fcr die Wissenschaft. Diese Lebensgemeinschaften sind erstens Beispiele f\u00fcr ganz selbstverst\u00e4ndlich sich ergebende Symbiosen in der Natur und zweitens oft ein Problem, weil diese Gemeinschaften sehr viel widerstandsf\u00e4higer werden als die individuellen Organismen es w\u00e4ren &#8211; in der Medizin mag man Biofilme deshalb nicht besonders und fragt sich eher wie man sie wieder aufl\u00f6sen kann. Maya Minder und Vivien Roussel hingegen sind genau von dieser Z\u00e4hheit des Belags fasziniert, der sich auf dem Kombucha bildet. Nach dem Trocknen bekommt man ein ledriges Material, mit dem derzeit viel experimentiert wird. Und zur\u00fcck ganz an den Anfang: Biofilme sind heisse Kandidaten f\u00fcr den Ursprung komplexerer Lebensformen. Tats\u00e4chlich kann man einen Biofilm auch als Proto-Organismus ansehen, in dem verschiedene Zellen verschiedenen Aufgaben nachgehen.\u00a0<br><br>Wer noch mehr wissen will: kommt an das Finissagen-Get-together am n\u00e4chsten Sonntag, den 7. Now it&#8217;s time to harvest! Hopefully the 2&#215;2 metre biofilm has become thick and tough enough.<br><br>Biofilm? No, not that <a href=\"http:\/\/www.imdb.com\/title\/tt0086967\/\">kind<\/a>.<br><br><br>Biofilms consist of a slime layer in which mixed populations of microorganisms (e.g. bacteria, algae, fungi, protozoa) [and multicellular organisms such as rotifers, nematodes, mites, fewborsters or insect larvae that feed on the microorganisms] are embedded. (a bit awkwardly formulated, Wiki, but yes: a large microorganism flat share). Such biofilms are not only interesting for kombucha enthusiasts, but also for science. Firstly, these communities are examples of symbioses that occur naturally in nature, and secondly, they are often a problem because these communities are much more resistant than individual organisms would be &#8211; in medicine, biofilms are therefore not so popular and people tend to ask how they can be dissolved again. Maya Minder and Vivien Roussel, on the other hand, are fascinated by precisely this toughness of the coating that forms on the kombucha. After drying, you get a leathery material that is currently being experimented with a lot. And back to the very beginning: biofilms are hot candidates for the origin of more complex life forms.
